Note sent to captains on 11 October about playoffs:

Hello Captains. Can I please get feedback on playoff structure asap. Please refer to my notes on the website. Personally, I think the split of each Division into two equal groups of 5 teams each (per Division) at the end of this round robin is the way to go. Last year’s system was okay, but there wasn’t a clear final game in each Division because the two teams in the final would have already played each other in the playoff round robin, and quite possibly the week before, thus making the final game redundant. Therefore, my inclination is to go with the “even split”, which also gives every team a shot at the championship all the way through, possibly down to the last week. The current round robin would be considered a seeding round robin since the top place team wouldn’t be in the same playoff group as the 2nd and 3rd place teams. There is some flexibility to determine what the split would be like, i.e., instead of 1,4,6,8,10, and 2,3,5,7,9, we could do 1,4,8,9,10, and 2,3,5,6,7 or something else. We could even look at combining the standings from the current round robin with the playoff round robin and play the top two teams in each Division in the finals, which would put equal incentive on the current round robin and the final round robin – in such a case, we would have a more even split with 1,3,5,7,9, and 2,4,6,8,10. The only problem with combining the standings is that some teams would be out of the running for the championship very early. Let me know. I can explain a bit more if necessary – probably best in person. Biraj
